Bedwetter even in diapers

Hi, I have a 6yr old who still has accidents occasionally during the day and cannot stay dry overnight, we took him out of diapers overnight when he started Kindergarten but he has had to go back to them as I was washing bedsheets everyday. In the last week or so even the diapers we have been using are not helping, he is still wetting the bed as they appear to leak. At his annual well-check last year the doctor advised us to limit his fluid intake 2hrs before bedtime, we have done this, we get him up to go to the bathroom when we go to bed & if we wake in the night to go we get him up again too. I am back to washing bedsheets every day again and I am getting frustrated.

My six year old son still wets the bed and will often soak through the GoodNites underpants. We have tried limiting his fluid intake before bed, waking him up before we go to bed (which was a nightmare), and have even tried the medication (just to see if it would work so he could feel comfortable on sleepovers). None of them worked. We are at the point now where we are just waiting for him to grow out of it.

Hello Kate, I've had the same problem as you have, a been there, done that situation. you might have to look for bigger diapers for him. I had to do that for my daughter who is 9 years old. GoodNites aren't reliable enough for everyday use and she outgrew baby diapers. I went with Tranquility Brand Slimline briefs for her. The are working every night realiably and leaking has since stopped. Fully wet diapers in the morning sometimes but all of it is contained in her diaper, nothing wetting the rest of the bedding. I have given up on limiting fluids in the evening or at night, works great on paper but unrealistic in real life. Pottying before bedtime sometimes works but only if she really has to go, she can't be forced to go. Try something new and see how that goes. Do an internet search for "youth briefs", you'll get many good results. Good Luck, Lisa

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem, I was worried as my 4yr old is pretty much dry all night. I guess it is something he needs to grow out of. Thanks for the info on different pants - I will take a look at that.

I'm very sorry that you are having some problems with leakage. If your child is wearing the wrong size, it could cause this problem to occur. Maybe consider a "smaller size" to see if this helps. Vikki

Very good point LisaW2010, concerning your comment about limiting liquids. I don't believe that works either, In fact, it's rather dangerous to limit water, especially during the summer time, even if it is like 2 hours before their bedtime. -- Edited by William at Mar 8, 2010 10:49 PM CST

Yes, William. You are very correct. It is dangerous to do so, even in Winter. For my daughter, I do not limit fluids, put her on medication, use bedwetting alarms, or anything like that. When she outgrew Pull-Ups, I started buying GoodNites. She still wears them now. She is now 10 years old. I don't mind that she has to wear GoodNites, because I know that it is not her fault. She doesn't mind either, because she has gotten used to them. I also have a 7 year old son, and a 3 year old daughter. My 7 year old also wets the bed, so he wears GoodNites, too. My 3 year old is not yet potty trained, and doesn't seem to be showing any signs of being ready, but I am not worried, because I know that she will learn when she's ready, and I know not to rush her. Anyways, my 10 year old and my 7 year old wear GoodNites with no problem. They don't wet very heavily, though. Any more questions, just ask. Sincerely, Magi Wolfie

Good morning, Dr. Wolffe Nadoolman has recently posted a response in the Ask The NiteLite panel concerning issues with bedwetting in older children and teens. You can find it here. You may find just the tip you and your child need. Jane -- Jane

Hello Magi, I'm of the same beliefs as you are. I have a 9 year old girl who is a bed wetter and even an evening wetter sometimes. I did try the medications for a short period. They worked, side effects though and risks caused me to rethink using them so my husband and I decided to stop with the medication. Now we just have her wear protection for against her wetting. I'm using diapers at home for reasons that one, she can wet through a GoodNite occasionally and also cost effectivness is a little better. We still purchase and use GoodNites though on a regular basis. The GoodNites are used as more like disposable underwear worn on trips, in the evening and on sleepovers. Also she's in them when feeling sick or ill and having periods of earlier wetting than bedtime. For the most part she is pretty accepting of wearing the GoodNites. For her it sure beats a wet bed and bedding and clothing. Take Care, Lisa

Lisa, Putting your child in diapers because she needs them is alright, as long as you keep boosting her self-esteem and encouraging her, not discouraging her. My daughter wets moderately, so GoodNites are alright for her. But a child that wets heavy may need to wear diapers. I will continue to encourage her that she will grow out of it and I hope you will do the same. Do you have any other strategies to help build your daughters self-esteem? Magi

Hello Magi, With my daughter diapers are really needed. she'll easily pee through a GoodNite during the night and there's no way she's ever make it all night long in a GoodNite. I didn't really want to have to diaper her but thats the only way her bedding and herself would remain dry. I'm looking into maybe getting some more absorbant pull up style pants for her but until we get a chance to try them diapers are the only way to go with her. She is pretty good about the diapers, she says she prefers them to a wet bed but there are times where she's embarrassed by them. We also save them for trips at night and illnesses when she is having more than normal wettings. Keeping up her self esteem is a very hard thing to accomplish. I do by trying to stay positive about ehr wetting and trying to get her to understand it's really not that big of a problem to have and something she'll hopefully outgrow soon enough. I and my husband still treat her maturely and approach her bedwetting in a positive and understanding manner. She's never punished for wetting the bed or even an accident before bedtime(which occasionally happens) It's explained to her that we fully know and understand it's out of her control and we would never degrade her for accidental wettings. How do you handle it with your daughter? I think it's great that Goodnites are reliable enough for her. Lisa
